Doggie Do's and Don'ts
Even
the best dogs can behave in unexpected ways when they're introduced to unfamiliar
places. Foreign smells and noises can upset your dog more than you'd imagine,
and if you throw in changes to his feeding and potty schedule, don't be surprised
if you find more than a tasty mint on your pillow when you retire for the evening!
Although pet mistakes are probably number one on the list of hotel pet peeves,
there are a few other things that guests with pets should consider when they stay
in pet-friendly places. Here are a few tips that will help make your next vacation
with Fido and family even better than the last: -
Always let the reservationists or front desk clerk know that you will be bringing
your dog.
-
Always check the pet policies where you'll be staying to verify that your pet
is within the permitted weight range, species specifications, and other requirements
for the place of lodging.
-
Keep identification on your dog as well as recent photos and veterinarian records
in your luggage. If possible, purchase a temporary ID tag with your hotel information
on it in case he escapes.
-
Always keep your dog on a leash when out of the hotel room to respect other guests
as well as protect your pet. Keep in mind that a dog that is restrained and in
unfamiliar territory may be more defensive than usual. For this reason, you will
want to keep him away from other guests and hotel staff.
-
Bring plenty of comfort items such as bedding, toys, treats, water/food bowls,
etc.
- If your
dog barks frequently, other guests might be disturbed, so consider leaving him
at home.
- After
walking your dog, always clean up after his mess.
-
If you leave your dog in the room alone, keep him contained in a crate since maids
will likely service your room. Also, leave on a television or radio to keep them
company.
- Bring
covers for furniture or beds to keep shedding to a minimum. Lint brushes work
great to remove hair from the room.
-
Consider feeding your dog in the bathroom and avoid carpet to minimize messes
while eating and drinking.
Keeping
these tips in mind while you travel with your dog can make your vacation fun for
everyone, including Fido! Other guests and the hotel staff will greatly appreciate
your consideration as well.
